Doncaster
Doncaster's history can be viewed at the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. It is an award-winning, interesting and contemporary building that houses a general collection relating to Doncaster's history. Weekly markets provide a variety of stalls with various merchandise on offer while Frenchgate, Colonnades and Waterdale shopping centres offer all the well known high street names.
Doncaster's world famous racecourse has been a major venue for racing since 1600 and from 1776 has held the coveted St. Leger, one of the oldest great English classic horse races. Cusworth Hall accommodates The Museum of South Yorkshire Life and depicts the changing social lives of local people over the last 250 years. Another country house worth visiting is Brodsworth Hall & Gardens. The spectacular circular keep of Conisbrough Castle makes it one of the oldest and finest medieval buildings in England.
The Dome is Britain’s largest indoor leisure centre with six swimming pools containing fountains, flumes, wild water and more! It also has an ice rink, fitness, beauty and hydro centre, squash and badminton courts and hosts artists and bands that perform concerts monthly. There are many different types of accommodation to choose from in Doncaster; it caters for business people, the race-goers and of course the seasonal tourists. Hotels, bed and breakfast and holiday cottages all provide comfortable and affordable accommodation and camping and caravanning sites are located just outside the town with excellent modern facilities. Located just off the A1(M) and with its own railway station and airport, Doncaster has great links to the motorway network and easy access to north, west and east Yorkshire.
