Selby
The growing Yorkshire market town of Selby lies twelve miles south of York, on the banks of the River Ouse. Although historically part of Yorkshire's West Riding, Selby is now the southernmost district in the county of North Yorkshire. The star attraction in Selby has to be Selby Abbey - one of the most spectacular Abbey Churches in England, often called the ‘hidden gem of Yorkshire’ due to its unparalleled size, age and grandeur.
The town has seen many changes over the years, most prominently the rejuvenation and development of the various shopping areas. From high street favourites to quaint, individual retailers, Selby offers something for all tastes and budgets. Every Monday sees Selby host one of Yorkshire’s finest open air markets, established in the 14th century by the Monks of the Abbey; it consists of over 120 stalls and is arguably one of the most popular markets in the region.
